Awakening of the Nation

Awakening of the Nation or National Movement (Icelandic: Þjóðvaki) was an Icelandic left-wing populist political party.

It was formed in 1994. One of the co-founders was Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir after she lost an internal election for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party. She was joined by members of the former communist People's Alliance. In the 1995 parliamentary elections it won 7.2% of the vote and four seats.

On October 2nd 1996 its members of parliament joined the Social Democratic Party to form a unified parliamentary entity.

In the 1999 parliamentary elections it formed an electoral alliance with the Social Democratic Party and the former communist People's Alliance and the feminist Women's List. In 2000 it formally merged with these other parties to form the Social Democratic Alliance.
